James Cooper is an award winning Art Director & Director with over 12 years experience who holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Communications. James is now based in the United States working between New York City and Los Angeles.
After graduating in Sydney, James worked as a junior broadcast designer with Australia’s premier post production houses before moving to London to Art Direct. In London he worked as an Art Director for esteemed creative consultancy, Stylorouge.
At Stylorouge James Art Directed high profile campaigns for clients such as Sir Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Westlife and Cancer Research UK. Traditional and digital work included Art Direction for the #1 UK chart album; Westlife ‘Face To Face’, Art Direction for Sir Paul McCartney’s acclaimed UK single “Fine Line” and Universal Music’s new Norwegian signing, Robert Post whose album became BBC Radio 2’s ‘Album of the week’ upon it’s release.
After a few years James moved back home to begin Art Directing in Sydney. Here he Art Directed successful projects for clients like Harlequin Publishers (Australia & UK), Warner Music Australia and SonyBMG Australia. James’ Art Direction work helped SonyBMG propel label mates Damien Leith and Shannon Noll to #1 in the Australian charts. He Art Directed both Damien Leith’s #1 albums ‘Where We Land’ & ‘Catch The Wind’ (both ARIA #1 albums) & Shannon Noll’s #1 ‘Turn It Up’ album (ARIA Australian Artist Albums Chart). After a string of Art Direction successes James started Art Directing for the Sydney office of the global creative company, AGI TM. At AGI TM James was able to fuse his passion for excellence with global thinking and go on to Art Direct large scale traditional and interactive campaigns major properties like Paramount’s ‘Star Trek’, ‘Watchmen’ & ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ DVD/Blu Ray releases and 20th Century Fox’s ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’. These campaigns included the full array of advertising formats & packaging including traditional packaging, special packaging, point of sale, outdoor, print media advertising and online advertising. James also created, named and Art Directed Paramount Australia’s first Smartphone app; ‘Moovy Shakr’. The app would enable users to search Paramount’s back catalogue of movies by their favourite actor or mood and then buy the film.
Shortly after these interactive campaigns James moved into the pure advertising world starting off as a Creative/ Digital Art Director at Dublin advertising agency, Rothco. At Rothco he would marry his international experience and his digital Art Direction to help Rothco win a Silver ICAD Award (Integrated Campaign), a Bronze ICAD Award (Online Display Yahoo Takeover), a Bronze Shark Award (International Cross Media Campaign) and a slot as an Official Honouree at the 16th Annual Webby Awards for O2’s ‘Bring Back The Roar’ campaign. Here he also worked with major brands like O2, Dublin Bus, The Irish Times, Absolut Vodka & Heineken. Around this time, James was approached by one of Ireland’s leading ad agencies, Irish International BBDO (A member of BBDO worldwide - headquartered in New York), to come and work with them and their client base.
At Irish International BBDO James created and Art Directed work such as the Aer Lingus Augmented Reality advertisement in the World’s first Augmented Reality Newspaper, oversaw a new website and Art Directed a new character design for Avonmore Milk’s online advertising and Art Directed the entire digital roll out of 3 Mobile’s support campaign for the Irish Team’s participation in the 2012 UEFA European Football (Soccer) Championship. James Art directed digital creative for multiple touchpoints including responsive design for Smartphone, Tablet and Desktop. At Irish International BBDO James also had the pleasure of working with clients like Guinness, Mars, Failte Ireland, Aviva, Electric Ireland, UPC and Bank of Ireland.
He has guest lectured on Art Direction and creativity at Shillington Colleges in Sydney and London, recently spoke at the OFFSET 2012 creative conference, as an Art Director who regular conceptualises through illustration – was featured in Taschen’s ‘Illustration Now! Vol.3’ featuring 150 of the world’s most exciting illustrators.
In 2012 James was invited to be one of four key Senior Creatives to judge on the ICAD (Institue of Creative Advertising & Design) Awards digital advertising panel in Dublin.Since leaving Irish International BBDO James Art Directs in a freelance capacity.
